NELFUND Frequently Asked Questions

The short answers to the NELFUND questions students ask most: who qualifies, how to apply, how money moves, what to do when something goes wrong, and how repayment works. Each answer links to the full guide — this page is the quick-reference hub, not a replacement for the detailed guides.

If your question is not answered here, the detailed guide for your topic is linked in each answer. If the portal’s current session details differ from anything below, the portal wins — NELFUND updates its guidelines and windows between sessions.

Who qualifies

Who is eligible for NELFUND? Nigerian students enrolled full-time in a recognised public institution (federal or state university, polytechnic, or college of education) that is onboarded on the portal, with verified admission, NIN, BVN, and a bank account in your own name. See NELFUND Student Loan Requirements.

Can private university students apply? No, not under the current structure. See Can Private University Students Apply for NELFUND?.

Can new students apply without a matric number? Yes — new students use their JAMB registration number or admission number in place of a matric number, per NELFUND’s announcements. See NELFUND Loan Eligibility for New Students.

Do returning students need to reapply? Yes, per session. A previous approval does not roll over. See NELFUND Loan Eligibility for Returning Students.

How to apply

Where do I apply? On portal.nelf.gov.ng directly. Never through a group link, an ad, or an agent. See NELFUND Application Portal: How to Register.

How do I apply, step by step? Create an account, verify with NIN and JAMB, complete your profile, choose institutional charges and/or upkeep, upload your admission letter, accept the terms including the GSI mandate, and submit. See How to Apply for NELFUND Student Loan.

What is JAMB verification? The portal’s check that your JAMB number matches JAMB’s records for your admission, alongside your NIN — one half of verification, with institutional confirmation the other half. See NELFUND JAMB Verification Explained.

Is there an application fee? No application fee is reported. Be suspicious of anyone charging you to register or apply.

Money: how much, and how it moves

How much can I get? Your session total = your institution’s verified charges + (monthly upkeep × active session months, if requested). No published cap has been found. See How Much Can You Get From NELFUND?.

How much is upkeep per month? Guides report ₦20,000/month in 2026 guides, with earlier guides reporting ₦15,000/month. Confirm the current figure on the portal before budgeting. See NELFUND Upkeep Loan Explained.

How does disbursement work? Institutional charges go directly to your institution; upkeep goes directly to your bank account. The two streams have separate timelines, and approval is not payment. See NELFUND Loan Disbursement: How It Works.

How long does NELFUND take to pay? NELFUND’s stated processing target is about 45 days (roughly 30 days internal + 15 days institutional verification), as a target, not a guarantee.

Can NELFUND pay for accommodation? Not directly, and never to a landlord — only through upkeep you spend yourself, or a hostel charge billed in your institution’s verified fee schedule. See Can NELFUND Pay for Accommodation?.

Can NELFUND pay acceptance fees? It depends on your institution’s verified fee schedule and current session coverage — check the portal schedule and your bursary before the deadline. See Can NELFUND Pay Acceptance Fees?.

When something goes wrong

My application says “no school information found”. What does that mean? It is a lookup result, not a rejection — usually your institution has not uploaded your session’s records yet, or you selected the wrong institution. See NELFUND No School Information Found: What to Do.

My JAMB verification failed. What do I do? Check, in order: wrong number, admission not on JAMB’s record (regularise first), name mismatch (correct at source), temporary service issue, or wrong identifier type. See NELFUND JAMB Verification Failed: Solutions.

My application was rejected. Can I reapply? It depends on the reason and the application-period rules — some rejections are fixed by correction and reapplication, others mean ineligibility. See NELFUND Application Rejected: Possible Reasons.

I cannot log in / I forgot my password. What do I do? Recover the existing account — password reset via email or NIN, or support with identity proof for a wrong or inaccessible email. Never create a second account. See NELFUND Login Problems and Solutions and NELFUND Password Reset Guide.

I already paid my school fees. Can I still apply? Yes — and if NELFUND later pays the same fees to your institution, the institution may owe you a refund or a written credit. See Can You Apply for NELFUND After Paying School Fees?.

Repayment

When does repayment start? Two years after NYSC, provided you are employed or earning. Graduation alone does not start it. See When Does NELFUND Repayment Start?.

How does repayment work? Zero interest, 10% of salary deducted at source (employed) or 10% of monthly profit remitted by you (self-employed), under a GSI mandate. Early repayment is reported as allowed. See How NELFUND Loan Repayment Works.

What if I have no job after NYSC + 2 years? Notify NELFUND with a sworn court affidavit every three months confirming you are not employed and have no income. See NELFUND Terms and Conditions Explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is NELFUND a grant or a loan? A loan — interest-free, but repayable. You repay exactly what you borrowed.

Can I apply for NELFUND and a scholarship at the same time? NELFUND’s terms state you should not be a beneficiary of another government-sponsored scholarship at the same time. For private scholarships, confirm with your school and NELFUND before applying. See NELFUND vs Scholarships: Which Is Better?.

Do I need to reapply every session? Yes. Each academic session requires a fresh application inside your existing account.

Where do I check my application status? On your NELFUND dashboard, by component — institutional charges and upkeep have separate statuses. See How to Check NELFUND Application Status.
