There is no single published “NELFUND amount” you can quote for every student. What you get is the sum of two components: your institution’s verified charges for the session (paid directly to your institution) plus your upkeep for the active session months (paid to your bank account). Your institution’s fee schedule and the number of active session months decide your total — not a flat national figure.
Any article that gives you one number for “how much NELFUND pays” is either quoting only the upkeep component, or inventing a total. This article gives you the formula, so you can calculate your own figure from your own institution’s schedule.
The formula
Your NELFUND total for a session = institutional charges for that session + (monthly upkeep × active session months, if you requested upkeep).
- Institutional charges: your institution’s verified fee schedule for the session. This varies by institution, programme, and level. A university student’s charges differ from a polytechnic student’s, and a final-year student’s charges may differ from a first-year student’s. There is no published flat rate.
- Upkeep: guides report a monthly figure of ₦20,000 per month in 2026 guides, with earlier guides reporting ₦15,000 per month. CareerMedal does not present either as a guaranteed current figure — confirm the current monthly amount on the portal for your session, then multiply by your active session months.
- Active session months: upkeep runs only during your active academic session, under NELFUND’s academic-calendar guidelines as reported. It stops at session end. Do not multiply upkeep by 12 unless your active session actually runs 12 months.

Worked examples (illustrative, not guarantees)
Using the commonly reported ₦20,000/month upkeep figure, purely to show the arithmetic:
- Example A: institutional charges ₦120,000 for the session + upkeep ₦20,000 × 8 active months = ₦120,000 + ₦160,000 = ₦280,000 for the session.
- Example B: institutional charges only, no upkeep = whatever your institution charges for the session, and nothing more.
- Example C: a 4-year programme, borrowing every session at Example A’s rate = ₦280,000 × 4 = ₦1,120,000 total across the degree — before any fee changes between sessions.
If the current upkeep figure on the portal is different from ₦20,000, redo the arithmetic with the portal figure. The formula does not change; only the input does.
What does not increase your total
- Requesting both components does not double anything. Institutional charges and upkeep are separate components with separate payment routes, not multipliers of each other.
- A higher fee schedule at a different institution does not raise your amount. You get your own institution’s verified charges, not another institution’s.
- Borrowing in a previous session does not raise the next session’s amount. Each session is calculated afresh from that session’s charges and active months.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a maximum NELFUND loan amount? No single published cap was found in the guides reviewed. Your total is bounded in practice by your institution’s charges and your active session months, not by a published ceiling. If NELFUND publishes a cap for a future session, the portal’s terms for that session will state it.
Can I get upkeep without institutional charges? Yes. You can tick Upkeep only, Institutional Charges only, or both, depending on what you need. Each component is calculated separately.
Does the upkeep amount change by institution type? No separate rate by institution type (university, polytechnic, college) is published in the guides. The same reported monthly figure applies, subject to portal confirmation for your session.
How do I know my exact total before I apply? You do not, to the naira, until verification confirms your institution’s charges and the portal confirms the current upkeep figure for the session. Estimate with the formula above, then confirm both inputs on the portal and with your institution’s bursary.
Is the total I borrow what I repay? Yes, at 0% interest. Your repayment total is the sum of what was actually disbursed for you — institutional charges plus upkeep received — not an estimate. See How NELFUND Loan Repayment Works.
