The NELFUND student loan is the Federal Government’s interest-free loan for students in public tertiary institutions: institutional charges paid directly to your institution, optional monthly upkeep paid to your bank account, and repayment starting two years after NYSC at 10% of your income. This guide is the complete map of the programme — what it is, who qualifies, how to apply, how money moves, and how repayment works — with links to the detailed guide for each part.
This guide is written as the programme’s current process guide, not as a frozen 2026/2027 snapshot. NELFUND updates its guidelines, portal, and session windows between sessions, so every section below carries the same instruction: confirm the current session’s details on portal.nelf.gov.ng before you act on them.
What NELFUND is
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) administers zero-interest student loans to eligible students in public tertiary institutions, covering institutional charges and, where requested, upkeep allowances. It is a loan, not a grant and not a scholarship: you repay exactly what you borrowed, and the terms you accept at application — including the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mandate — follow you after graduation.
Key facts, in one place:
- Interest: 0%. You repay only what was disbursed for you.
- No guarantor, no collateral required.
- Two components: institutional charges (to your institution) and upkeep (to your bank account). Request one or both.
- Repayment: from two years after NYSC, at 10% of salary (deducted by your employer) or 10% of monthly profit (if self-employed). Unemployed beneficiaries notify NELFUND with a sworn affidavit every three months instead of paying.
Who qualifies
- Nigerian citizen, enrolled full-time in a recognised public institution (federal or state university, polytechnic, or college of education) that is onboarded on the NELFUND portal.
- Verified admission and enrolment: JAMB registration number or admission number for new students, matriculation number for returning students, with your institution confirming your records for the current session.
- NIN, BVN, and a bank account in your own name.
- No previous bank loan default, and no disqualifying conviction (fraud, forgery, examination malpractice, drug offences, cultism), as reported.
- Private institution students are not eligible under the current structure.

How much you get
There is no flat national figure. Your session total = your institution’s verified charges for the session + (monthly upkeep × active session months, if you requested upkeep). Upkeep is reported at ₦20,000/month in 2026 guides, with earlier guides reporting ₦15,000/month — confirm the current figure on the portal before budgeting. How money moves, and how long it takes
- Institutional charges go directly to your institution’s account, never to you. Upkeep goes directly to your bank account. Approval and disbursement are different stages, and the two components can arrive at different times.
- Processing target: NELFUND’s Managing Director has stated a target of about 45 days — roughly 30 days of NELFUND internal processing, plus about 15 days for institutional verification. That is a target, not a guarantee, and verification delays, bank mismatches, and calendar issues can extend it.
- No backwards payments: NELFUND does not make retrospective payments. If you apply mid-session, you receive only what is left of that session’s entitlement, not the full session backdated. Once processing for a new session begins, previous session payments stop, to prevent double payment.
- Fee schedules come from your institution: institutions input their official fee schedules into NELFUND’s verification system, and you can see the uploaded amount on your portal. If it is higher than your actual course fee, you can challenge it — and NELFUND has warned institutions against unreasonable fee increases, saying payments for charges considered excessive may be withheld.

If something goes wrong
- No school information found: usually your institution has not uploaded your session’s records yet, or you selected the wrong institution.
- JAMB verification failed: wrong number, admission not on JAMB’s record (regularise first), name mismatch, or a temporary service issue.
- Rejected: read the reason — some rejections are fixed by correction and reapplication, others mean ineligibility under current rules.
- Login or password problems: recover the existing account (password reset via email or NIN, or support with identity proof for a wrong/inaccessible email). Never create a second account.
Repayment, in brief
Repayment starts two years after NYSC, provided you are employed or earning. Employed: 10% of salary deducted at source. Self-employed: 10% of monthly profit remitted by you, with business details submitted (reported within 60 days of becoming self-employed). Unemployed and without income: sworn court affidavit every three months. Early repayment is reported as allowed. NELFUND has debunked viral claims of life imprisonment for unpaid loans as fake news — inability to pay is handled by the affidavit process; false statements, not inability, attract criminal liability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I am in a private university? No, not under the current structure. NELFUND covers public institutions only.
How long does NELFUND take to pay? NELFUND’s stated processing target is about 45 days (roughly 30 days internal + 15 days institutional verification), but it is a target, not a guarantee. Verification and bank issues can extend it.
Will NELFUND pay me for a previous session I missed? No. NELFUND does not make retrospective payments — applying mid-session gives you only what is left of that session.
Where do I apply? On portal.nelf.gov.ng directly. Never through a group link, an ad, or an agent — fake portals exist to harvest NINs, BVNs, and bank details.
