Can NELFUND Pay for Accommodation?

NELFUND does not make a separate accommodation payment, and it does not pay a landlord. Accommodation is covered, if at all, in one of two indirect ways: through your upkeep allowance, which you spend on living costs at your discretion, or — only if your institution’s verified fee schedule includes a hostel/accommodation charge — through the institutional-charges payment to your institution. There is no third route called “accommodation funding”.

Students ask this because accommodation is often their largest living cost, and because “upkeep” sounds like it should cover rent. It does — but as a general living allowance, not as a rent payment, and the distinction matters for budgeting.

Route 1: Upkeep, spent on living costs including rent

Upkeep is a monthly allowance paid to your bank account, during your active session, for living expenses. You decide how to spend it — food, transport, data, books, and rent are all living costs, and upkeep can be put towards any of them. What upkeep is not:

  • Not a rent payment. NELFUND does not pay your landlord, your hostel manager, or your estate agent. The money goes to you, and you pay rent from it.
  • Not enough, on its own, to guarantee rent coverage. Upkeep is reported at ₦20,000/month in 2026 guides (earlier guides: ₦15,000/month — confirm the current figure on the portal). Whether that covers your rent depends on your rent, your other living costs, and how many active session months you receive it for. Budget from the confirmed figure, not from an assumption that upkeep equals rent.
  • Not year-round. Upkeep stops at session end and requires reapplication next session. A rent agreement that runs through holidays needs funding for the holiday months from elsewhere.

Route 2: Hostel charges inside institutional charges (only if billed that way)

If your institution’s verified fee schedule includes a hostel or accommodation charge as part of its institutional charges, then NELFUND’s institutional-charges payment to your institution covers that charge, in the same way it covers tuition and other billed items. That depends entirely on your institution’s fee schedule:

  • Check your institution’s fee schedule and your student portal for whether a hostel/accommodation item appears among the verified charges. If it does, it is covered through the institutional stream.
  • If it does not appear, it is not covered through that stream, and no separate accommodation claim creates coverage.
  • Private accommodation (a rented room, flat, or off-campus hostel not billed by your institution) is never part of institutional charges. It can only be funded, if at all, from upkeep or other sources.

What to do in practice

  1. Check your fee schedule for a hostel/accommodation line item. That single check decides whether Route 2 applies to you.
  2. Confirm your upkeep figure on the portal for the session, and budget rent from it realistically: upkeep minus food, transport, and other essentials is what is actually available for rent.
  3. Do not sign a rent agreement assuming NELFUND will pay the landlord. No NELFUND payment goes to a landlord, and no landlord should be told otherwise.
  4. If accommodation costs exceed upkeep plus other support, look at the other funding routes in the Scholarships & Bursaries cluster and your institution’s own support options, rather than assuming an accommodation top-up exists within NELFUND.

Frequently asked questions

Does NELFUND pay for hostel accommodation? Only indirectly: if your institution bills a hostel charge as part of its verified institutional charges, NELFUND’s payment to the institution covers it. Otherwise, accommodation comes from your upkeep allowance, which you spend yourself.

Will NELFUND pay my landlord directly? No. No NELFUND payment goes to a landlord. Upkeep goes to your bank account; institutional charges go to your institution.

Can I use my upkeep for rent? Yes. Upkeep is a living allowance, and rent is a living cost. You decide the split between rent and other living costs, within the amount you actually receive.

Is there a separate accommodation loan from NELFUND? No separate accommodation loan or top-up is published in the guides reviewed. Accommodation funding within NELFUND is only the two routes above.

My hostel fee is higher than my upkeep. What do I do? Budget the gap from other sources — family support, scholarships, bursaries, or institutional payment arrangements — and check whether any part of your hostel fee is billed through your institution’s fee schedule (Route 2). Do not assume NELFUND will cover the difference.

Sources and last update

  • Accommodation routes (upkeep as discretionary living allowance, institutional hostel charges only if billed in the verified schedule, no landlord payment, no separate accommodation loan), compiled from NELFUND’s payment structure (charges to institution, upkeep to student) and fee-schedule mechanics.
  • Upkeep amount conflict carried forward with confirm-on-portal instruction. No accommodation-specific amount is asserted, because none is published separately from upkeep and institutional charges.
