Can You Gain Admission With Awaiting Result?

Yes — conditionally. JAMB allows awaiting-result candidates to register, write UTME, and be considered for admission, but no admission is finalised until your actual O’Level result is uploaded and verified. The honest answer is: you can be admitted with awaiting result, but you cannot stay admitted on awaiting result alone.

The distinction matters, because candidates hear two opposite claims — “awaiting result candidates cannot gain admission” and “awaiting result does not matter” — and both are wrong.

What JAMB allows

JAMB’s policy is clear: candidates awaiting results can register, provided they upload their results once released, and no institution recommendation is considered if the candidate does not upload the result on JAMB’s portal. In practice, that means:

  • You can register with awaiting result.
  • You can write UTME.
  • You can be considered, screened, and even offered admission in principle — but the offer cannot be finalised on a blank O’Level record.
  • Once you upload, your status changes to With Result, and processing can proceed.

What institutions do differently

JAMB’s allowance is not every institution’s timetable. Institutions differ on when they require your result:

  • Some institutions allow you to apply for Post-UTME/screening with awaiting result, entering “awaiting result” for O’Level grades, and then require the upload before admission is finalised.
  • Some institutions require your result before screening, because they calculate aggregates from O’Level grades. If your result is not uploaded by their screening deadline, you cannot be ranked — regardless of JAMB’s general allowance.
  • All institutions require the upload before final admission. There is no institution that finalises admission on a permanently blank O’Level record.

So before you rely on awaiting result, check your chosen institutions’ Post-UTME/screening notices for their specific rule. “JAMB allows it” does not override “this institution requires it by this date”.

The timeline that decides it

  1. Register with awaiting result at a CBT centre.
  2. Write UTME and check your result.
  3. Apply for Post-UTME/screening, following each institution’s awaiting-result rule.
  4. Upload your O’Level result the moment it is released — at an accredited CBT centre, then verify on CAPS (My O’Level Result).
  5. Update your institution’s portal too, if it holds its own copy of your O’Level grades.
  6. Check CAPS for your admission status, and accept or reject any offer there.

The risk is not the awaiting status itself. It is a result released after a screening deadline, or an upload forgotten until lists have closed. Both are avoidable by uploading immediately on release.

If your result is poor when it arrives

Upload it anyway, and check it against your course requirements honestly:

  • If you meet the five credits including English and Mathematics (and course-specific subjects), proceed — your admission processing continues.
  • If you are short of a required credit, your options are a change of course to one your grades support, a change of institution, or the next exam diet — not a fake upload, and not silence. See How to Change Course on JAMB Portal while its window is open.
  • If you are combining two sittings, upload both, and confirm both appear on CAPS. A single-sitting upload when you need two is a common reason for a stalled profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I gain admission with awaiting result? Yes, conditionally — you can be considered and offered admission in principle, but it is only finalised once your actual result is uploaded and verified.

Do all universities accept awaiting result? JAMB’s policy allows it, but institutions set their own screening deadlines. Check each institution’s Post-UTME notice for its specific rule.

What if my result comes out after my school’s screening closes? You will likely miss that institution’s screening for the cycle, even with a good UTME score. That is why uploading immediately on release matters — and why checking screening deadlines before choosing institutions matters even more.

Can I do Direct Entry with awaiting result? No. Direct Entry requires your O’Level results (and advanced qualification) to be available and verified at registration. Awaiting O’Level results are not accepted for DE — see JAMB Direct Entry Registration Guide.

I uploaded, but CAPS still says Awaiting Result. Am I still being considered? Not until it changes to With Result. Allow up to 48 hours, then return to the centre with your confirmation slip if it has not changed.

  • JAMB awaiting-result policy (register allowed, upload required, no recommendation without upload), institution variation in screening rules, and DE exclusion, cross-checked across multiple independent JAMB guides.
  • Institution-specific rules are deliberately not listed as a universal table — they change per institution and cycle, so candidates must check their institutions’ current notices.
