Most Nigerian universities accept awaiting results for Post-UTME registration and admission consideration — because JAMB itself allows candidates to register UTME with awaiting results — but no university finalises admission without the actual O’Level results uploaded on CAPS. “Accepts awaiting results” means “you may compete now and upload later”, not “you may be admitted without results”.
The distinction matters because students lose admissions every year by treating an awaiting-result offer as final, then failing to upload results before the institution concludes its admission processing.
How awaiting-result admission works
- Register UTME with awaiting results (at most two sittings, only one of which may be awaiting — see the awaiting-result JAMB guide).
- Apply for Post-UTME at institutions that permit awaiting-result candidates, indicating awaiting-result status clearly on the screening form.
- Pass the screening (exam or screening-only, as the institution runs it).
- Upload your O’Level results on JAMB CAPS the moment they are released — and confirm the upload on CAPS, not just on the institution’s portal.
- Admission is finalised only after the upload is verified and your five required credits (including English and, for most courses, Mathematics) are confirmed. If you fail a required subject, awaiting-result status does not save you.
Which universities accept awaiting results?
The general rule: most do. JAMB’s awaiting-result policy is national, and the majority of federal, state, and private universities align with it for Post-UTME registration. Polytechnics and colleges of education are similarly reported as accepting awaiting results, provided results are submitted before admission is finalised.
A reported example with explicit conditions — Lagos State University (LASU): LASU is reported as accepting awaiting results for Post-UTME registration and admission in 2026, with conditions: you must have sat for WAEC/NECO/NABTEB in the same year of admission (or earlier), results must be uploaded before LASU concludes admission processing, and credits in required subjects must be confirmed. LASU’s conditions are a good template for what “accepts awaiting results” means in practice at any institution — the conditions, not the headline, are the policy.
The exceptions to check, not assume: some institutions and some courses are stricter — particularly professional courses and institutions with their own screening rules. A few institutions require completed O’Level results at the point of screening application. The only reliable check is the institution’s current admission page for the session: if it says awaiting results are accepted, they are; if it is silent, ask the admission office before paying for the form.
If your results are delayed past the institution’s deadline
- Upload immediately on release, even if the institution’s main admission list has been published — some institutions run supplementary lists, and an uploaded result can still be considered for those.
- Contact the admission office with your JAMB number and screening details, and ask whether your case can still be processed. Do not assume a provisional offer survives a missed upload deadline — provisional admission may be withdrawn if results are not uploaded in time.
- Do not pay anyone to “hold” your admission. No agent can hold an admission without uploaded results on CAPS.

Frequently asked questions
Do all universities accept awaiting results? Most do, for Post-UTME registration and consideration, because JAMB’s policy allows it. But some institutions and courses are stricter — check the institution’s current admission page before paying for the form.
Can I be admitted without ever uploading my O’Level results? No. Admission is not finalised without the upload and verification of your five required credits on CAPS.
What if I fail English or Mathematics when my results come out? Then the admission cannot be finalised for courses requiring those subjects, regardless of your UTME or screening performance. Awaiting-result status is a timing arrangement, not a waiver.
Is it better to apply with awaiting results or wait for results? Apply with awaiting results, to secure your place in the screening. Waiting for results can mean missing the screening window entirely — and you can upload later, once released.
Can I combine two sittings with awaiting results? Yes, in most cases — two sittings are permitted generally, with only one sitting awaiting. Confirm the institution’s sitting rules for your course, since competitive courses may require one sitting.
Sources and last update
- Awaiting-result mechanics (JAMB allows awaiting at UTME registration; upload on CAPS before finalisation; no admission without upload; max 2 sittings, 1 awaiting) from JAMB’s process and the awaiting-result guides.
- LASU 2026 example (accepts awaiting, with same-year sitting, upload-before-processing, required-credits conditions) from 2026 guides — presented as a reported example with its conditions, not as a universal rule.
- “Most accept, some stricter” framing is deliberate: no exhaustive verified list is asserted, because institution policies vary by session and must be checked per institution.
