Students in public colleges of education are eligible for NELFUND on the same terms as university and polytechnic students: verified full-time enrolment in a participating public college, NIN, BVN, institutional charges paid directly to the college, and optional upkeep to your bank account.
College of education students are sometimes left out of NELFUND summaries that mention only “universities and polytechnics”. That omission is a summary error, not a programme rule. NELFUND’s programme descriptions name colleges of education explicitly, alongside universities and polytechnics, and its portal-opening announcements address accredited tertiary institutions generally.
What applies to college of education students
- Public colleges only. Federal and state colleges of education that are onboarded on the NELFUND portal qualify. Private colleges are reported as not qualifying, under the same public-only structure.
- NCE programmes are within the programme’s undergraduate scope, provided you are enrolled full-time and verified for the current session. The programme does not publish a separate NCE rule — enrolment and verification decide, not the certificate level.
- Full-time enrolment is reported as required. Part-time college programmes are reported as not qualifying — confirm your programme’s classification with your college and on the portal if you are unsure.
- Affiliated programmes: some colleges of education run degree programmes affiliated with universities. If your programme is affiliated, your verifying institution for NELFUND purposes is the institution on your admission and enrolment records — check which institution’s name appears on the portal list and on your admission letter, and use that one. Do not select the affiliating university if your records sit with the college, or vice versa.

Charges and upkeep for college students
- Institutional charges are your college’s verified fee schedule for the session. College fee schedules are generally lower than university schedules, so the institutional-charges component is generally smaller — but there is no published college flat rate, and this article does not invent one.
- Upkeep follows the general reported monthly figure (see the amount conflict flagged in the upkeep guide — confirm the current figure on the portal). There is no published college-only upkeep rate.
- Programme length for NCE (typically 3 years) means total borrowing is the sum of each session’s charges and upkeep, reapplied each academic year. Track it session by session — see How Much Can You Get From NELFUND?.

Frequently asked questions
Can NCE students apply for NELFUND? Yes, if enrolled full-time in a participating public college of education and verified for the current session.
Are colleges of education really covered, or only universities and polytechnics? They are covered. NELFUND’s programme descriptions name colleges of education explicitly, alongside universities and polytechnics.
Are private colleges of education eligible? No, as reported. The programme covers public institutions only under its current structure.
My programme is affiliated with a university. Which institution do I select? The institution on your admission and enrolment records — the one the portal lists for your verification. If you are unsure, ask your college’s student affairs unit which institution holds your NELFUND record.
My college is not on the portal’s list. What do I do? Check with your college whether it is onboarded and whether its student records have been uploaded for the current session. Do not select a different institution.
