School fees are what you pay per session for your education (tuition and other billed charges for that session). Acceptance fee is what you pay once, when you accept an admission offer, to confirm it and secure your place. Different purpose, different timing, different frequency — and confusing the two is how students underpay, overpay, or miss a deadline that costs them the offer.
| Acceptance fee | School fees (institutional charges) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Confirm acceptance of the offer, secure your place | Pay for the session’s education (tuition + billed charges) |
| Frequency | Once per admission | Every session |
| Timing | On accepting the offer, by the institution’s deadline | At registration, per session (or per semester, where the institution splits it) |
| Amount basis | Set by the institution for the admission | Set by the institution’s fee schedule for the session and course |
| NELFUND position | Conditional — depends on fee-schedule inclusion + current session coverage | Covered, where verified — paid directly to the institution |
| Refund | Typically non-refundable (confirm institution policy) | Refund/credit rules apply where a double payment exists (see after-paying-fees guide) |
Why the distinction matters in practice
Deadline risk is different. Missing the acceptance-fee deadline can mean losing the admission offer itself. Missing a school-fee deadline typically means blocked registration or examination access, not loss of the offer — though both must be met, and both deadlines should be confirmed on the portal, not assumed.
NELFUND treatment is different. NELFUND’s institutional-charges payment covers verified session charges, paid directly to the institution. The acceptance fee is covered only if it is included in the institution’s verified fee schedule and within NELFUND’s current coverage for the session — a conditional position that must be checked, not assumed. A student who assumes NELFUND covers the acceptance fee, and therefore does not pay it by the deadline, risks the offer itself.
Payment channels are the same rule, different invoices. Both payments go through the institution’s official portal, through official channels, with receipts — but they are separate invoices, for separate amounts, and paying one does not pay the other. A receipt for the acceptance fee is not proof of school-fee payment, and vice versa.
Budgeting is different. The acceptance fee is a one-off cost in your admission year. School fees recur every session for the programme’s duration, and they can rise between sessions. A four-year budget that counts the acceptance fee once and school fees per session is realistic; a budget that counts either one wrong is not.

Common confusions, resolved
- “I paid my acceptance fee, so my school fees are covered.” No. Acceptance fee secures the place; school fees pay for the session. Both must be paid (or covered by NELFUND, where applicable).
- “NELFUND paid my school fees, so my acceptance fee is covered too.” Not necessarily. Check whether the acceptance fee is in the verified schedule and within current coverage — see the acceptance-fee coverage guide.
- “The acceptance fee is part of school fees, so I can pay it later with school fees.” No. The acceptance fee has its own deadline, earlier than school-fee payment, and missing it risks the offer.
- “I was charged an acceptance fee every session.” That should not happen for a single admission — an acceptance fee is once per admission. If you are being charged it per session, query it with the bursary, with your admission letter and previous receipts in hand. (A fresh admission — for example, after a transfer or re-admission — can carry a fresh acceptance fee, which is a different case.)

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between school fees and acceptance fee? School fees pay for each session’s education; acceptance fee is a one-off payment confirming you accept the offer and securing your place.
Do I pay acceptance fee every year? No — once per admission. School fees are paid every session.
Does NELFUND pay both? NELFUND pays verified institutional charges (school fees) directly to the institution. Acceptance-fee coverage is conditional on fee-schedule inclusion and current session coverage — check both before assuming.
What happens if I pay school fees but not the acceptance fee? You risk the offer itself, because the acceptance fee secures the place by its deadline. Pay the acceptance fee first, by its deadline, then school fees by theirs.
Can the acceptance fee be refunded if I decline the offer? Typically no, once paid — but confirm your institution’s specific refund policy, as policies vary, and do not pay the acceptance fee for an offer you have not decided to accept.
