Pre-Degree Programmes in Nigeria Explained

A pre-degree programme is a one-year preparatory programme run by a university (or its affiliated centre), designed to prepare candidates for admission into that university’s degree programmes — usually at 100 level, through the university’s own admission process, rather than through UTME alone. Completing a pre-degree programme does not automatically guarantee admission: it qualifies you for consideration, and the university’s admission decision — including any required UTME score, screening, or internal examination — still governs.

Pre-degree programmes are often sold as “admission without JAMB”. That is misleading. Most pre-degree programmes still require UTME registration and a minimum UTME score for the final admission step, and the programme’s own rules for the session state exactly what is required.

How pre-degree programmes work

  • One-year preparatory study in subjects relevant to your target course, at the university or its centre, with lectures, continuous assessment, and a final examination or assessment, as the programme structures it.
  • Admission into the programme itself is separate from admission into the degree: programme admission typically requires O’Level results (five credits including English and, for most courses, Mathematics, in course-relevant subjects, in not more than two sittings), with the university’s programme page stating its specific requirements for the session.
  • Progression to the degree depends on the programme’s rules for the session: commonly, a minimum programme result, plus a UTME score meeting the university’s minimum (and, where applicable, the department’s cut-off), plus screening — or, in some programmes, progression based primarily on the programme’s own final examination. The programme page for the session states the progression rules; assume nothing from another session or another university.
  • Entry level: typically 100 level in the university’s degree programme (unlike Direct Entry’s 200-level entry). Pre-degree is preparation for first-year entry, not advanced standing.
  • Programme-specific, not transferable: a pre-degree programme at one university prepares you for that university’s degrees. It does not generally transfer to another university’s admission process — a pre-degree certificate from University A is not an admission ticket to University B.

The key distinction: pre-degree and remedial prepare you for 100-level entry at the same university; IJMB and JUPEB qualify you for 200-level Direct Entry at any accepting university.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pre-degree programme? A one-year preparatory programme run by a university, designed to prepare candidates for admission into that university’s degree programmes at 100 level, through the university’s own admission process.

Does pre-degree guarantee admission? No. Completing the programme qualifies you for consideration under the programme’s progression rules (programme result, UTME score where required, screening) — the university’s admission decision still governs.

Can I enter university without JAMB through pre-degree? Generally no — most pre-degree programmes still require UTME registration and a minimum score for final admission. Check the programme’s rules for the session; do not trust any claim that pre-degree bypasses JAMB entirely.

Is pre-degree better than IJMB or JUPEB? They serve different goals: pre-degree targets 100-level entry at one university; IJMB/JUPEB target 200-level Direct Entry at any accepting university. Choose by your goal, your target institutions, and your O’Level and UTME position.

What if I fail the pre-degree final examination? Progression rules govern — some programmes permit resits, some do not, and failure typically means no progression for that session. Check the programme’s rules before enrolling, not after the examination.
