The admission requirements for Nigerian universities, in their standard form, are: five O’Level credits including English Language (and Mathematics for most courses), in course-relevant subjects, in not more than two sittings; a UTME score meeting the institution’s minimum and your course’s departmental cut-off, with the correct UTME subject combination; first-choice status (in most cases) and successful screening; and a minimum age of 16 at admission. Direct Entry, part-time, distance, and open-university routes have their own requirement sets, covered in their own guides.
Requirements vary by institution and course — the standard form below is the baseline, and the JAMB brochure for your course and institution, for the current session, is the authority where they differ.
O’Level requirements
- Five credit passes, including English Language, and Mathematics for most courses (some Arts courses waive Mathematics — check the brochure for your course).
- Course-relevant subjects: the five credits must include the subjects your course requires, as stated in the brochure. A credit in an irrelevant subject does not substitute for a required one.
- Not more than two sittings, with course-specific one-sitting exceptions for competitive programmes (UNILAG, and competitive programmes at UI, OAU, UNILORIN, UNIZIK, among others, as reported).
- Uploaded on JAMB CAPS before admission is finalised. Awaiting-result candidates may screen where permitted, but admission is not finalised without the upload.

UTME requirements
- Four subjects, including English Language (compulsory for all candidates) and three subjects relevant to the course, as stated in the brochure. A wrong subject combination disqualifies you at screening, regardless of score.
- Minimum score: the institution’s minimum for screening consideration (2026 bands: 150 floor to 220 top), plus your course’s departmental cut-off, which runs higher for competitive courses.
- First-choice status, in most cases, for screening consideration. Change of institution (JAMB, via an accredited CBT centre) before the screening window closes, where needed.
- Screening: exam, screening-only aggregate, or physical verification, as the institution runs it for the session — with the screening form and fee paid through the official portal only.
Age and other requirements
- Minimum age 16 at admission (JAMB’s 2026 policy minimum, as reported). Candidates below 16 at admission face age-based disqualification, regardless of scores — confirm the current session’s age rule, as it is enforced at admission processing.
- Good standing and document consistency: name spelling consistent across JAMB, O’Level, and NIN records (mismatches are corrected at the source — NIMC, exam body, or JAMB correction — before admission is finalised, not after).
- Institution-specific requirements: some institutions and courses add requirements (for example, physical fitness or medical reports for certain programmes, interviews for others, or single-sitting O’Level rules for professional courses). The institution’s admission page for the session states them.
Requirements by route
| Route | Core requirements |
|---|---|
| UTME (standard) | 5 O’Level credits + UTME (correct subjects, meeting cut-offs) + screening + age 16 |
| Direct Entry | 5 O’Level credits + advanced qualification (ND/NCE/IJMB/JUPEB/A’Level) + JAMB DE form + screening; no UTME, no awaiting results |
| Part-time | As UTME or DE, per programme, with part-time-specific scheduling and (typically) longer duration — check the programme’s requirements |
| Distance learning (ODL) | As UTME or DE, per programme, via the institution’s distance-learning centre — check NUC approval for the programme |
| Open university (NOUN and similar) | 5 O’Level credits (including English and Mathematics), no UTME required — check the programme’s specific requirements |

Frequently asked questions
What are the general admission requirements for Nigerian universities? Five O’Level credits including English (and Mathematics for most courses), in course-relevant subjects, in not more than two sittings; a UTME score meeting the institution minimum and departmental cut-off, with the correct subject combination; first-choice status and successful screening; and minimum age 16.
Can I gain admission without Mathematics? For most courses, no — Mathematics is required. Some Arts courses waive it. Check the brochure for your specific course.
Do all universities require first choice? Most do, for screening consideration. If your target institution is not your first choice, complete a change of institution before the screening window closes.
What is the minimum age for university admission in Nigeria? 16 at admission, per JAMB’s policy minimum as reported. Confirm the current session’s enforcement, as age is checked at admission processing.
Are requirements the same for every course? No. The baseline above is standard, but each course’s brochure entry states its specific O’Level subjects, UTME subjects, and any additional requirements — and competitive courses add sitting rules and higher cut-offs.
