After admission, before resumption, complete this checklist in order: accept on CAPS and print both admission letters; pay the acceptance fee through the official portal; complete clearance with originals and photocopies; pay school fees (or confirm NELFUND coverage); register courses; sort accommodation and funding early; and keep every receipt and document. Missing any step blocks the next — clearance requires the letters, registration requires clearance and fees, and examinations require registration.
Resumption week is the wrong time to discover a missing document. Work through this list before resumption, and arrive with everything already done.
The checklist, in order
1. Accept on CAPS, promptly. Accept the offer on CAPS before expiry, then print your JAMB admission letter from e-Facility (paid service) and obtain the institution’s admission letter from its portal. Both letters are needed for clearance.
2. Pay the acceptance fee, officially. Through the institution’s official portal, by its deadline, with a receipt. Missing the deadline can mean losing the offer — pay this before school fees, not after.
3. Complete clearance. Bring originals plus photocopies: JAMB admission letter, institution admission letter, JAMB result slip, O’Level results, birth certificate, local government identification (where required), acknowledgement slip, acceptance-fee receipt, and passport photographs (as the institution specifies). Name mismatches across documents must be resolved at the source before clearance — not during it.
4. Pay school fees, or confirm coverage. Pay through the official portal, by its deadline, with a receipt — or, if you are a NELFUND beneficiary, confirm on your portal that the institution’s verified charges have been disbursed, and resolve any gap with the bursary before registration closes. A double payment (you paid, then NELFUND disbursed) follows the refund route: bursary, receipts, disbursement record, written request.
5. Register courses. Course registration follows clearance and fee payment, within the institution’s registration window. Register the correct courses for your level and department — wrong course registration creates carryover problems that follow you for the programme.
6. Sort accommodation early. Hostel allocation, off-campus housing, or family arrangements should be settled before resumption, not during it — hostel spaces fill, and off-campus costs rise near resumption. Where NELFUND upkeep applies, remember it covers living costs as upkeep (or a billed hostel charge), never a payment to a landlord directly.
7. Sort funding for the session. Confirm your funding mix: NELFUND (institutional charges + upkeep, where approved), family support, part-time work, scholarships or bursaries, and institutional payment plans where available. Budget the session (confirmed figures × active months, fixed costs first, one-month buffer — see the budgeting guide) before spending begins.
8. Prepare academically. Confirm your department’s first-semester courses, required materials, and any departmental orientation or screening (medical, faculty, or departmental registration, as the institution runs them). Attend orientation — it is where registration, examination, and departmental rules are explained, and missing it means learning them by mistake.
9. Keep everything. Every receipt, letter, slip, and registration printout, in physical and digital copies, for the programme’s duration — through to graduation and NYSC. Documents lost in first year are documents needed in final year.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do first after receiving admission? Accept on CAPS promptly, print both admission letters, and pay the acceptance fee through the official portal by its deadline — in that order.
What documents do I need for clearance? JAMB and institution admission letters, JAMB result slip, O’Level results, birth certificate, local government identification where required, acknowledgement slip, acceptance-fee receipt, and passport photographs as specified — originals plus photocopies.
What happens if I miss course registration? Late registration penalties apply where the institution imposes them, and missed registration can mean missed examinations for the semester. Register within the window — do not assume an extension.
Do I need to pay school fees before clearance? The order varies by institution — some require fee payment before clearance, some after. The institution’s clearance notice for the session states its order; follow it, not another institution’s order.
What if my NELFUND disbursement has not arrived by registration? Contact the bursary with your NELFUND portal evidence, and ask about temporary arrangements — NELFUND has appealed to institutions to show understanding with deadlines for students awaiting disbursement, but that appeal is not a guarantee from any individual institution, and protecting your registration comes first.
