“Admission in Progress” means your admission is still being processed and has not been concluded. It is encouraging — it means you are in the pipeline — but it is not admission yet, and JAMB has warned specifically against treating it as secured admission.
If you take one thing from this article, take that distinction. Everything else is detail.
What is actually happening behind the status?
JAMB clarified this status in September 2026. “Admission in Progress” can mean one of two things, both unfinished:
- Your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but the head of the institution has not yet recommended it, or
- The head of the institution has recommended you, but JAMB has not yet approved or disapproved the recommendation.
In both cases, a further step has to happen before your status becomes “Admitted”. A recommended offer can still be disapproved by JAMB if you do not meet the prerequisite requirements — for example, if your O’Level result is missing, your subjects do not match the course, or your screening requirements are incomplete.
That is why the Accept and Reject buttons are not active yet at this stage. There is no approved offer to accept or reject.

What to do while it says Admission in Progress
Do:
- Keep checking CAPS every few days. Statuses update as institutions and JAMB work through batches.
- Check the Transfer Approval tab each time. A course change can appear there while your main status is still processing.
- Confirm your O’Level result is uploaded on CAPS (My O’Level Result). A missing upload is one of the commonest reasons a profile stalls at this stage — see How to Upload O’Level Result on JAMB CAPS.
- Confirm your UTME subjects match your course. If they do not, that is a problem to face now, not after a disapproval.
Do not:
- Announce that you have gained admission. You have not yet, in CAPS terms, and telling family, paying fees, or travelling on the strength of this status alone is premature.
- Pay anyone who promises to “push” the status to Admitted. Processing is done by the institution and JAMB. No third party can move it.
- Stop checking because you assume it will resolve itself. Most do resolve, but the ones that don’t are usually the ones with a missing upload or a requirement gap that the candidate could have fixed.
How long does it stay like this?
There is no fixed number of days, and any guide giving you one is guessing. Some profiles move from Admission in Progress to Admitted within days; others sit for weeks while an institution works through its lists. The useful signal is not the calendar — it is whether anything else on your profile needs fixing. If your O’Level is uploaded, your subjects match, and your screening is complete, then waiting is the correct action. If any of those is incomplete, fix it now, because waiting will not fix it.
When it changes
- To “Admitted” / “Congratulations, you have been offered admission”: an approved offer is now on your profile. Accept or reject it promptly — see How to Accept Admission on JAMB CAPS.
- To “Not Admitted”: the proposal did not result in an offer in that round. That is not necessarily the end of the cycle — keep checking, and read What Not Admitted Means on JAMB CAPS.
- To a Transfer Approval request: the institution wants to admit you into a different course. Decide on the Transfer Approval tab; do not ignore it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Admission in Progress a guarantee I will be admitted? No. JAMB has said explicitly that it does not mean automatic admission. It is a positive sign, not a final decision.
Can I accept admission while it says Admission in Progress? No. There is no approved offer to accept yet, so the Accept button is not active. Wait for the status to change to Admitted.
Should I upload my O’Level result again while waiting? Only if it is missing or incorrect on CAPS. Re-uploading a correct result does not speed up processing, and a duplicate upload can create confusion. Check My O’Level Result first.
My friend’s status changed in two days and mine has been stuck for three weeks. Is mine broken? Not necessarily. Institutions process different courses and lists at different speeds. Check for a fixable gap on your own profile (upload, subjects, screening) before assuming a system fault.
Does checking CAPS more often make it change faster? No. Checking every few days is enough to catch a change promptly without feeding anxiety.
