Correcting your state or LGA of origin on JAMB goes through the same correction system — e-Facility payment, then completion at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. Like other personal-data corrections, it can only be done once, and it can affect catchment-area consideration — so correct it early, and check what it changes before you submit.
State and LGA of origin matter for more than identification. Institutions apply catchment-area policies in admission, favouring candidates from their catchment states. A wrong state of origin can therefore put you in the wrong catchment calculation — either losing you a catchment advantage you should have, or giving you one you are not entitled to, which is flagged at verification. Either way, the record should be accurate.
Before you correct: know what “origin” means here
State/LGA of origin is where you originate from, not where you live, where you schooled, or where you registered. It should match your state of origin certificate and your NIN record’s place of origin. If you are correcting it, you are correcting it to your actual origin — not to a state whose catchment advantage you would prefer. Submitting a false origin to gain catchment advantage is misrepresentation, and it is caught at clearance when certificates are checked.
If your NIN record’s place of origin is also wrong, correct NIMC first, because JAMB pulls biodata from NIMC. A JAMB correction contradicting your NIN record will not hold at verification.

How to correct your state or LGA, step by step
Step 1: Confirm your correct state and LGA of origin from your state of origin certificate and your NIN record. Know the exact LGA name — LGAs have similar names across states, and a wrong LGA in the right state is still a wrong record.
Step 2: Log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng with your registered email and password.
Step 3: From the services list, open Registration, then UTME Data Correction (or DE Data Correction for Direct Entry). For registrations from 2021 downward, use the Application for Correction of Data (2021 Downward) route.
Step 4: Select State/LGA of Origin as the correction type, and pay the portal fee of ₦2,500 for the correction. A CBT centre will add its own service charge — confirm the total before you start.
Step 5: Visit an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office to complete the correction, with your registration number, ID, and your state of origin certificate if the centre asks for it. The operator enters the corrected state and LGA.
Step 6: Check the correction slip printed at the centre before you leave — state and LGA spelling, exactly. State/LGA correction is once-only.
Step 7: After the correction, verify your JAMB profile and confirm the corrected state and LGA are consistent with your NIN record and your origin certificate.
The once-only rule
Per the structured JAMB process note most often cited, state/LGA correction can only be done once. Course/institution changes can be repeated with separate payments; state/LGA correction cannot be assumed repeatable. Check the slip at the counter — that check is the correction.
How a state/LGA correction affects catchment
Catchment policies vary by institution, and they change. In general, institutions reserve a proportion of places for candidates from their catchment states, with merit and other criteria for the rest. Correcting your state of origin to its true value may move you into, or out of, a catchment group for a particular institution. That is not a reason to delay the correction — an inaccurate record that is discovered at clearance is worse than a corrected record that changes your catchment group honestly. But it is a reason to understand the change: after correcting, check whether your institution choices still make sense, and whether a change of institution is also warranted while its window is open — see How to Change Institution on JAMB Portal.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to correct state or LGA on JAMB? ₦2,500 per correction on the portal, plus a CBT centre service charge if completed at a centre.
Can I correct my state or LGA more than once? Per JAMB’s process note, state/LGA correction can only be done once. Treat it as one shot.
Should I correct my state of origin to my state of residence? No. State of origin is where you originate from, as on your origin certificate — not where you live or schooled.
Will correcting my state affect my catchment advantage? It may, because catchment is based on state of origin. A correct record may move you into or out of a catchment group for a particular institution. That is why you correct it honestly and early, and re-check your institution choices afterwards.
What document proves my state of origin? Your state of origin certificate, issued by your LGA or state. Bring it to the centre if asked, and make sure the LGA name on it matches the LGA you are correcting to.
