NELFUND upkeep payments are monthly allowances paid directly to your bank account, during your active academic session, after approval and verification. They are separate from institutional charges (which go to your institution), they follow your institution’s academic calendar, and they stop when the session ends — so an upkeep payment that has not arrived is a different problem from a school-fees payment that has not arrived, and needs a different check.
How upkeep payments move
- You request upkeep by ticking Upkeep on your application, alongside or instead of institutional charges.
- You are verified — portal match plus institutional confirmation, including your institution’s academic calendar and session details for the session.
- NELFUND approves your upkeep request for the session.
- NELFUND pays your bank account directly, in periodic instalments, during the active session. The schedule is shown on your portal dashboard — track it there, not from a friend’s payment dates, which depend on a different institution’s calendar and verification timing.
- Payments stop at session end, under the academic-calendar rule. To receive upkeep for the next session, you reapply at the start of that session.

Why upkeep payments are delayed or missing
School verification delay. NELFUND depends on institutions to verify student records — matric number, admission status, department, level, session, school fees, and academic calendar. If your institution has not verified your details, or has not uploaded its academic calendar and session details on time, your upkeep payment may be delayed.
Wrong bank details. Wrong account number, name mismatch between your bank account and your official records, inactive bank account, account not linked properly, or BVN/NIN details not matching the application. Your bank account name must match your official school and NIN records. Guides also report a commercial-bank-account requirement (not wallet accounts) — confirm the current rule on the portal.
Reconciliation mismatch. When your application, school verification, bank details, and payment records do not align, NELFUND may need to reconcile the transaction before releasing money, even after approval.
Portal technical issues. A technical glitch on the portal affected upkeep disbursement for some beneficiaries in June 2026, with payments resuming in batches after reconciliation. A systemic delay looks identical, from the student’s side, to a personal delay — which is why checking your own details first, then checking for official updates, matters.
Academic session issues. If you applied for a session that has already ended, the upkeep request may be rejected or delayed. Upkeep is session-bound: it does not run across holidays as if the session continued, and it does not backdate to months before your application (no retrospective payments).
Upkeep not selected, or not approved. Check your dashboard: did you actually tick Upkeep on this session’s application, and is the upkeep component approved? Approval of institutional charges alone does not mean upkeep was requested or approved — the components have separate statuses.
What to do if your upkeep has not arrived
- Check your dashboard for the upkeep component specifically: requested, approved, pending, or rejected — and for any notification or request for further action.
- Confirm you selected upkeep on this session’s application. If you did not, that is the answer, and the fix is next session’s application (upkeep is not added retrospectively to a session already applied for).
- Check your bank details on the portal: account number, bank, and name match against your bank statement and official records.
- Confirm with your institution that your details and academic calendar have been verified for this session.
- Check your bank statement for the payment, including any batch or delayed posting — and check whether other students at your institution (same session, same calendar) have been paid, which helps distinguish a personal issue from an institutional or systemic one.
- Contact NELFUND support through official channels with your application reference, dashboard wording, bank details confirmation, and your institution’s verification confirmation, if the issue persists. Keep a record of the complaint.
- Do not pay anyone to “release” your upkeep, and do not submit a duplicate application — neither accelerates payment.

Frequently asked questions
Will I still receive upkeep if my school fees have not been paid? Not necessarily at the same time. Tuition support and upkeep are separate components with separate processing. Check each component’s status on your dashboard separately.
How much upkeep will I receive each month? Guides report ₦20,000/month in 2026 guides, with earlier guides reporting ₦15,000/month. Confirm the current monthly figure on the portal for your session before budgeting — do not budget from a guide alone.
Does upkeep continue during holidays? No, as a general rule under the academic-calendar guidelines: upkeep runs during the active session and stops when the session ends. Confirm your institution’s calendar treatment for breaks and extensions if your session’s calendar is unusual.
My school fees were paid by NELFUND, but my upkeep has not arrived. Is something wrong? Possibly, or possibly not yet — the components have separate timelines. Check the upkeep component’s status, your bank details, and your institution’s calendar verification, in that order, before concluding there is a fault.
Can I receive upkeep for months before I applied? No. NELFUND does not make retrospective payments. Applying mid-session gives you only what is left of that session.
