How NELFUND Pays Institutional Fees

NELFUND pays your institutional fees directly to your institution’s official account, for the verified charges for your session, after your application is approved and your institution has confirmed your enrolment. You do not receive the money, you do not forward it, and you do not need to pay the school first and get refunded — unless you already paid before disbursement, in which case the refund route below applies.

This guide is the payment-mechanics companion to the institutional charges explainer. That article explains what institutional charges are; this one explains how the payment itself moves, how to confirm it, and what to do when the school says it has not arrived.

How the payment moves

  1. Your institution inputs its fee schedule into NELFUND’s student verification system — per course, per session. When you apply, you can see the uploaded amount on your portal. If it is higher than your actual course fee, you can challenge it.
  2. You apply and are verified — portal match (JAMB + NIN) plus institutional confirmation of your enrolment, department, level, session, and fees.
  3. NELFUND approves your institutional-charges request for the session.
  4. NELFUND remits the verified amount directly to your institution’s official account. The payment is for your session’s charges, as verified — not a flat amount, and not whatever figure a blog quotes.
  5. Your institution credits your student record for the amount received. This last step is where many “not received” complaints actually live: NELFUND may have paid, but the institution has not yet credited your individual student account.

How to confirm the payment

  • On your NELFUND dashboard: check the disbursement information for the institutional-charges component specifically — not just your overall approval status.
  • With your institution’s bursary: ask whether NELFUND’s payment for your session has been received and credited to your student record. Bring your application reference, your matric/admission number, the session, and the amount shown on your portal.
  • On your school portal: check whether your session’s fees show as paid, or whether a credit is sitting on your account. A session showing as paid twice, or a credit balance, is the signature of a double payment (you paid + NELFUND paid) — see the after-paying-fees guide.
  • Timing: NELFUND’s overall processing target is about 45 days (roughly 30 days internal + 15 days institutional verification), as a target, not a guarantee. A payment that has not arrived within that target, with verification complete, is worth following up — a payment that has not arrived because verification is incomplete is not yet late.

If your school says it received nothing

  1. Save a screenshot of your dashboard’s disbursement information and approval status.
  2. Ask the school to confirm its position in specific terms: has NELFUND’s payment for your session been received at all, or received but not yet credited to your record? Those are different problems with different fixes.
  3. Contact NELFUND through official support channels with your application reference, the dashboard screenshot, and the school’s response. Keep a record of the complaint so you can follow up.
  4. Meanwhile, ask your institution about temporary registration arrangements. NELFUND has appealed to institutions to show understanding with registration and fee-payment deadlines for students awaiting loan disbursement, and to allow temporary registration so students do not lose access to education while awaiting disbursement. That appeal is not a guarantee from any individual institution, but it is a reasonable basis for the conversation — especially around examination eligibility.
  5. Do not pay anyone to “release” the payment, and do not submit a duplicate application.

Fee increases and additional charges

NELFUND’s Managing Director has warned institutions against unreasonable increases in tuition and other charges following the introduction of the loan scheme, saying schools that exploit the scheme to raise fees risk having their payments withheld — and that some institutions reversed fee increases after realising NELFUND could withhold payments for charges considered excessive. The Fund has also warned institutions against imposing additional charges on students as a condition for accessing NELFUND funding.

What that means for you: if your institution’s uploaded fee schedule looks higher than your actual course fee, challenge it on the portal (you can see the uploaded amount there). If you are asked to pay an additional charge as a condition for accessing NELFUND funding, that is the practice NELFUND warned against — raise it with your institution and, if needed, with NELFUND support, with the charge documented.

Frequently asked questions

Does NELFUND pay institutional fees to me or to my school? To your school, directly into its official account. You never hold the institutional-fees money.

How do I know NELFUND paid my school? Check your dashboard’s disbursement information for the institutional-charges component, then confirm with your institution’s bursary that the payment was received and credited to your student record.

My school says no payment, but my dashboard says approved. Who is right? Both can be, at different stages: approved does not mean disbursed, and disbursed to the institution does not mean credited to your individual record yet. Follow the steps above to establish which stage your payment is actually at.

Can I challenge my institution’s fee amount on NELFUND? Yes — institutions input fee schedules into the verification system, you can see the uploaded amount on your portal, and you can challenge it if it differs from your actual course fee.

What if my institution charges extra to access NELFUND? NELFUND has warned institutions against imposing additional charges as a condition for accessing funding. Document the charge and raise it with the institution and, if needed, NELFUND support.
