NELFUND Upkeep Loan Explained

The NELFUND upkeep loan is a monthly living allowance, paid directly to your bank account, that you request by ticking Upkeep on your application — separate from institutional charges, which go to your institution. It is optional, it is a loan (not free money), and it only runs during your active academic session.

Upkeep is the part of NELFUND students talk about most, and the part most often misquoted. This guide separates what is stable about upkeep from what changes between sessions.

How upkeep works

  1. You request it by ticking Upkeep on your NELFUND application, alongside or instead of Institutional Charges.
  2. Your bank details must be correct — BVN, bank, and account number in your own name, matching your records. Upkeep is paid into this account, and a wrong account number stops it from reaching you.
  3. It is paid in periodic instalments to your bank account, during your active academic session.
  4. It stops when the session ends. Under NELFUND’s fresh guidelines as reported, disbursements strictly follow each institution’s academic calendar: students receive upkeep only during the active session, and once the session ends, disbursement stops automatically. To access upkeep for the next session, you reapply at the beginning of the next academic year.
  5. It is part of your loan. Upkeep amounts you receive are added to the total you repay after NYSC, on the same 0% interest terms as institutional charges. Borrowing upkeep you do not need increases what you repay later — tick it because you need living support, not because it is available.

How much is upkeep?

Guides report the monthly upkeep figure as ₦20,000 per month, and that figure is the most commonly reported one in 2026 guides. However, earlier guides reported a different figure (₦15,000 per month), and NELFUND updates its guidelines between sessions — so CareerMedal states the commonly reported figure with a clear instruction: confirm the current monthly amount on the NELFUND portal at application, before you budget around it.

Do not plan rent, food, or transport around a figure from a blog, including this one, without confirming it on the portal for your session. A budget built on an outdated upkeep figure is a budget that fails mid-session.

How to budget upkeep honestly

Upkeep is a supplement, not a salary. Used well, it covers part of living costs during the session. Used as if it were full support, it runs out and leaves a gap that students fill with debt. A realistic approach:

  • Confirm the current monthly amount on the portal first, then budget from that confirmed figure, not from a guide.
  • Budget only for active-session months. Upkeep stops at session end — do not spread it across holidays as if it continued.
  • Track what you receive against what you borrowed. Every upkeep instalment increases your eventual repayment total. Keep a simple record: session, months received, total upkeep borrowed.
  • Reapply each session deliberately. At the start of each academic year, decide afresh whether you need upkeep for that session, rather than auto-ticking it out of habit.

Frequently asked questions

Is upkeep free money? No. It is a loan component. You repay what you receive, interest-free, starting two years after NYSC.

Do I have to take upkeep if I take institutional charges? No. Upkeep is optional. You can request institutional charges only.

Why did my upkeep stop? Most commonly because the academic session ended, under NELFUND’s academic-calendar rule. Reapply at the start of the next session. If it stopped mid-session, check your portal status and your bank details, and follow up through official channels.

Can upkeep pay for accommodation? Upkeep is a living allowance paid to your bank account, and you decide how to spend it within your living costs. It is not a separate accommodation payment, and it is not paid to a landlord. Whether it covers your accommodation depends on the amount and your costs — budget from the confirmed figure.

What if my bank details change? Update them through the portal’s profile/update process before the next disbursement, and confirm the change has reflected. A disbursement to a closed or wrong account is a delay you can prevent.
