NELFUND institutional charges are the tuition and related charges your institution bills you, which NELFUND pays directly to the institution — never to you. If you tick Institutional Charges on your application, you are asking NELFUND to settle your school bill, not to send you money for school.
This distinction is the whole point of this guide, because it is the most misunderstood part of the loan. Students who expect institutional charges in their bank account, or who spend money assuming it will arrive, are misunderstanding the payment route.
What institutional charges cover
Institutional charges are the charges your institution levies for your programme — tuition and related institutional fees, as billed on your institution’s fee schedule or invoice. The exact items depend on your institution and programme. NELFUND pays what the institution charges, as verified through the institution’s own records — not a flat national amount, and not whatever figure a blog quotes for “school fees”.
If your institution’s invoice includes items NELFUND does not cover, those remain your responsibility. Check your institution’s fee schedule and NELFUND’s current coverage guidance on the portal, rather than assuming every item on the invoice is covered.

How the payment works
- You request it by ticking Institutional Charges on your NELFUND application, after your student status is verified.
- Your institution confirms your enrolment and your charges, through its own records and fee schedule.
- NELFUND pays your institution directly, into the institution’s official account. You do not receive the money, you do not forward it, and you do not need to “pay the school and get refunded”.
- Your institution credits your student account for the amount paid. Confirm with your institution’s bursary that the payment has reflected on your student record — do not assume it from the portal status alone.
Institutional charges vs upkeep: do not confuse them
| Institutional Charges | Upkeep | |
|---|---|---|
| Paid to | Your institution, directly | Your bank account, directly |
| Covers | Tuition and institutional fees as billed | Living expenses, monthly |
| You receive cash? | No | Yes, in periodic instalments |
| Requested by | Ticking Institutional Charges | Ticking Upkeep |

You can request one or both. Requesting institutional charges only is common, and it does not affect your eligibility for upkeep in a later session — but each session requires a fresh application for both, under NELFUND’s per-session guidelines as reported.
Per-session rule
Under NELFUND’s fresh guidelines as reported, institutional charges and upkeep follow each institution’s academic calendar. Payments run during the active session and stop when the session ends, and you reapply for both at the beginning of the next academic year. One approved application does not cover your whole degree. Mark the start of each academic year as a reapplication point, and confirm your institution has uploaded its academic calendar and session details for that year — institutions have been urged by NELFUND to do this promptly to prevent delays.

Frequently asked questions
Will NELFUND pay my institutional charges into my bank account? No. Institutional charges go directly to your institution’s account. Only upkeep goes to your bank account.
Does NELFUND cover acceptance fees? That depends on your institution’s fee schedule and NELFUND’s current coverage for the session. Check your institution’s invoice and NELFUND’s portal guidance — do not assume acceptance fees are included or excluded without checking.
What if my institution’s charges change mid-session? The payment is based on the verified charges for the session. If charges change, confirm with your institution’s bursary and NELFUND how the difference is handled, rather than assuming an automatic top-up.
Can I request institutional charges without upkeep? Yes. Tick only Institutional Charges on your application.
My portal says approved, but my school says no payment received. What do I do? Allow time for bank and bursary processing, then follow up with both your institution’s bursary (with your application details) and NELFUND through official channels. Keep your application reference to hand.
