Direct Entry (DE) is JAMB’s route into university at 200 level (or higher, depending on qualification) for candidates who already hold an advanced qualification — ND, HND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB, A’Level, or a first degree. You register with a profile code and ePIN like UTME, but at a Professional Registration Centre, with your advanced qualification verified — and no awaiting O’Level results allowed.
DE is not a shortcut around UTME requirements. It replaces the UTME exam with an advanced qualification, but it does not replace the O’Level requirement, the verification, or the university’s own criteria.
Who DE is for
- ND/OND holders from accredited polytechnics.
- HND holders.
- NCE holders from accredited colleges of education.
- IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A’Level, and equivalent A’Level holders.
- First-degree holders seeking another undergraduate admission or a course change.
- University diploma holders, and holders of other JAMB-recognised advanced qualifications (including NABTEB advanced certificates and NBAIS higher Islamic studies certificates, as listed by JAMB).
DE admission is into universities. Polytechnics and colleges of education have their own separate processes for holders of post-secondary qualifications — DE through JAMB is the university route.
Before you register: eligibility checklist
- O’Level: minimum five credits, in not more than two sittings, including English Language and subjects relevant to your course. Mathematics is required for science, technology and social science courses. No awaiting O’Level results for DE — all results must be available and uploaded.
- Advanced qualification: at least one recognised qualification, in subjects relevant to your intended course. See JAMB Direct Entry Requirements for Nigerian Universities for grade thresholds.
- Verification: your awarding institution must verify your advanced qualification before admission can be processed. A statement of result is valid only within a limited period as reported by JAMB guides (NCE statements 1 year, others 3 years) — confirm the current validity rule for your qualification before registering with an old statement.
- Single registration: register only once. Duplicate registration invalidates all applications.
- Upgrade rule: upgrading from UTME to DE is allowed only if declared during UTME registration, as reported by JAMB guides. You cannot quietly convert a UTME application into a DE application afterwards.
How to register, step by step
Step 1: Generate your profile code: send NIN [space] your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from your registered phone number, as with UTME — see How to Create a JAMB Profile Code.
Step 2: Buy your DE ePIN from an approved outlet (bank, accredited CBT centre, or online payment platform, as JAMB directs for the cycle). The fee is set by JAMB for the cycle — check the current cycle notice rather than a previous year’s figure, as DE fees and included items change.
Step 3: Go to an accredited JAMB Professional Registration Centre (PRC) with your profile code, ePIN, O’Level result(s), advanced qualification certificate or statement, birth certificate or age declaration, and local government identification certificate.
Step 4: Complete registration at the centre: biometrics, institution and course choices, and upload of your O’Level and advanced qualification results. Confirm every detail on your registration slip before leaving — especially your qualification type and course choice.
Step 5: Print and keep your DE registration slip with your registration number.
Step 6: After registration, your awarding institution verifies your qualification, and you apply for your chosen universities’ DE screening as each university directs. DE admission, like UTME admission, is finalised through CAPS — check your admission status there and accept or reject any offer.
What DE does not do
- It does not waive O’Level requirements. You need both the advanced qualification and the O’Level credits.
- It does not guarantee 200-level entry for every qualification at every university. The entry level depends on the university and the qualification — some universities admit certain qualifications at 200 level, others at 300 level, and some only for related courses.
- It does not allow awaiting results. If your advanced qualification or O’Level result is still pending, wait for it rather than registering with a placeholder.
- It does not work with fake or unverified results. Advanced qualifications undergo strict verification, and submission of fake results leads to disqualification and prosecution, as JAMB warns.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for Direct Entry with awaiting O’Level result? No. DE requires all O’Level results to be available, uploaded and verified at registration.
Can I apply for DE with awaiting ND/NCE result? No, for the same reason — your advanced qualification must be available and verifiable. Awaiting results are not accepted for DE.
What level will I be admitted into through DE? Typically 200 level, or higher for some qualifications and universities, depending on the university and how closely your qualification matches the course. Confirm with your chosen university.
Can I change from UTME to DE after registering for UTME? Only if declared during UTME registration, as reported by JAMB guides. You cannot convert afterwards by a routine change.
Do I write an exam for Direct Entry? Not a UTME exam. Universities run their own DE screening, and you must follow each university’s screening process.
Sources and last update
- DE eligibility, accepted qualifications, no-awaiting-results rule, verification requirement, single-registration rule, and upgrade rule, cross-checked across multiple independent JAMB guides and JAMB’s 2026 UTME/DE registration guidelines as reported by those guides.
- DE fee deliberately not stated as a single figure: guides report conflicting breakdowns for the cycle, so candidates should check JAMB’s current cycle notice.
