How to Check a University Admission List

To check a university admission list: check JAMB CAPS first (it is the authoritative record), then check the institution’s official portal or published list for your name, course, and session — and treat the two as a pair. A name on an institution’s list without a CAPS offer is not yet an admission, and a CAPS offer without the institution’s list confirmation is a detail to verify, not a contradiction to panic over.

Admission lists are published in batches (merit list, then supplementary lists), and different institutions publish on different schedules. Checking once, on one channel, is how students miss their own admission.

Check JAMB CAPS first

  1. Log in to JAMB e-Facility → Check Admission Status → Access my CAPS.
  2. Read the status carefully: “Admission in Progress” means proposed or recommended, not admitted. “Not Admitted” is the default starting status, not a rejection. “Admitted” (with institution and course shown) is the offer — accept it promptly, before it expires.
  3. If CAPS shows an offer, accept it (or reject it, if you are certain — rejection is generally final for that offer). Do not leave an offer unanswered while you wait for a preferred institution, without weighing the expiry risk.
  4. If CAPS shows “Admission in Progress”, the institution has proposed you but JAMB has not finalised the offer. Wait, and keep checking — do not pay anyone to “push” it through.

Check the institution’s list

  1. Go to the institution’s official portal (typed directly, or linked from the institution’s main website) and look for its admission list section — or check the published list (PDF or portal search) for your name, JAMB number, course, and session.
  2. Search by JAMB registration number, not just by name — names repeat, and a same-name match is not your admission.
  3. Check every batch. Institutions publish merit lists first, then supplementary (second, third, and further) lists as places free up. A missing name on the merit list is not a final answer — keep checking supplementary lists until the institution closes admission for the session.
  4. Confirm the course matches the CAPS offer. If the institution’s list shows a different course from CAPS, contact the institution’s admission office before accepting — a course mismatch resolved after acceptance is harder to fix than one resolved before.

If your name is missing from both

  • Confirm your screening status: did you complete the institution’s screening (form, fee, documents, exam or screening, as applicable) and meet its minimum and departmental cut-offs? An incomplete screening is the commonest reason for a missing name.
  • Confirm your O’Level upload on CAPS. No upload means no admission, even with a strong screening performance.
  • Confirm your first-choice status. Most institutions screen first-choice candidates first; a screening application to a non-first-choice institution may not have been considered.
  • Wait for supplementary lists, and meanwhile consider a change of institution or course (JAMB, before the window closes) to an institution still screening, rather than waiting passively for a list that may never include you.

If your name appears somewhere unofficial

  • A WhatsApp list, a blog list, or an agent’s message is not an admission list. Only JAMB CAPS and the institution’s official portal or published list count. A name on an unofficial list, without a CAPS offer, is not an admission — and anyone charging you to “confirm” it is running a scam.
  • Verify before paying anything. No acceptance fee, school fee, or “confirmation fee” should be paid until CAPS shows your offer and the institution’s official list confirms it.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more reliable, CAPS or the institution’s list? CAPS is the authoritative record — it is JAMB’s system, and the offer there is what you accept. The institution’s list is the institution’s confirmation. Check both, and treat a mismatch as something to resolve with the admission office, not as a reason to pay an intermediary.

What does “Admission in Progress” mean? That the institution has proposed or recommended you, but JAMB has not finalised the offer. It is not admission yet, and it is not a rejection. Keep checking.

My name is not on the merit list. Am I rejected? Not necessarily. Supplementary lists follow the merit list, and places free up as candidates accept elsewhere or fail to upload results. Keep checking until admission closes for the session.

Can I check admission lists without JAMB CAPS? You can check an institution’s published list without CAPS, but you cannot accept an admission without CAPS. The CAPS check is not optional — it is where acceptance happens.

Someone sent me a list with my name on it. Is that admission? Only if CAPS shows the same offer and the institution’s official portal confirms it. Unofficial lists are not admissions, and anyone charging to “confirm” one is a scam risk.
