The JAMB mock exam is an optional practice exam, run by JAMB on the same CBT system as UTME, for candidates who indicate interest during registration. Your mock score does not count towards admission, does not affect your UTME score, and does not guarantee anything — its value is entirely in what it teaches you about the real exam before the real exam happens.
Candidates misunderstand the mock in both directions: some treat it as a second UTME that matters, and some dismiss it as useless because it “doesn’t count”. Both miss the point. It is a rehearsal, and rehearsals are useful precisely because they do not count.
What the mock is — and is not
- It is optional. You indicate interest during UTME registration. If you did not indicate interest, you do not sit the mock.
- It is on the CBT system. Same computer-based format, same type of interface, same time pressure as UTME — that familiarity is the main benefit.
- It is not UTME. Your mock score is not your UTME score, is not sent to institutions as an admission score, and does not appear on your result slip.
- It is not a predictor with a formula. There is no reliable conversion from mock score to UTME score. A high mock score does not guarantee a high UTME score, and a low mock score does not doom you — it diagnoses what to fix.
How to take the mock
Step 1: During UTME registration at an accredited CBT centre, indicate that you want to take the mock exam. This is decided at registration, not afterwards — you cannot add yourself to the mock after registration has closed.
Step 2: When JAMB activates mock slip printing for the cycle, print your mock examination slip (separate from your main UTME slip) through e-Facility or the slip printing route — see How to Print JAMB Examination Slip for the general slip process, and make sure you print the mock slip, not the main slip, for the mock.
Step 3: Go to your assigned mock centre on the mock date and time on the slip, with the mock slip and identification as JAMB directs for the cycle.
Step 4: Sit the mock as if it were UTME: same timing discipline, same approach to difficult questions, same care with the CBT interface.
How to use your mock result
The mock result is a diagnostic, not a verdict. Use it like this:
- Check which subjects were weakest, not just your total. A total score hides subject gaps.
- Map wrong answers back to syllabus topics — see JAMB e-Syllabus: How to Use It. Each weak topic becomes a study task for the weeks before UTME.
- Note CBT problems, not just knowledge gaps. Did you run out of time? Did you struggle with the interface, with moving between questions, with the calculator? Those are fixable before UTME, and the mock is the safe place to discover them.
- Fix your exam-day logistics from the mock experience. Transport, timing, centre location, what to carry — everything you learned at the mock centre applies to UTME day.
- Do not panic over a low mock score, and do not relax over a high one. Both are information, not outcomes. The candidates who benefit most from the mock are the ones who change their study plan because of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the JAMB mock exam compulsory? No. It is optional, and you indicate interest during registration.
Does my mock score affect my admission? No. It does not count towards admission and is not sent to institutions as an admission score.
Can I register for the mock after UTME registration? No, as reported by JAMB guides — mock interest is indicated during registration. If you did not indicate it then, you do not sit the mock for that cycle.
Is there a separate slip for the mock? Yes. The mock has its own examination slip, separate from your main UTME slip. Print the correct one for the correct exam.
What if I miss the mock? Nothing happens to your UTME application. You lose only the rehearsal benefit. Prepare for UTME directly, with extra attention to CBT practice and timing.
Sources and last update
- Mock as optional, indicated at registration, CBT-based, non-counting towards admission, with a separate slip, cross-checked across multiple independent JAMB guides.
- Mock fee deliberately not stated: guides vary on whether and how much is charged for the mock in a given cycle, so candidates should check JAMB’s current cycle notice rather than a previous year’s figure.
