Direct Entry into a Nigerian university requires two things together, not either one alone: five O’Level credits (in not more than two sittings, including English and course-relevant subjects) plus a recognised advanced qualification at the grade your university requires. A strong ND with weak O’Level results fails, and strong O’Level results with no advanced qualification is not DE at all — it is UTME.
Universities set their own DE requirements above JAMB’s minimum. This article gives you JAMB’s floor and the commonly reported grade thresholds, then tells you how to check your university’s actual requirement — because that is the number that decides your admission.
The O’Level requirement (applies to every DE candidate)
- Minimum five O’Level credits, in not more than two sittings.
- Must include English Language and subjects relevant to your intended course.
- Mathematics is compulsory for science, technology and social science courses.
- No awaiting results. All O’Level results must be available, uploaded and verified at registration.
- Your O’Level subjects must align with your course. An ND in Accountancy does not compensate for missing O’Level Mathematics for an Accounting degree, for example.
The advanced qualification requirement (and commonly reported thresholds)
| Qualification | Commonly reported minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ND / OND (accredited polytechnic) | Lower Credit | Some universities require Upper Credit for competitive courses |
| HND (accredited polytechnic) | Pass at HND level, course-relevant | Entry level varies by university |
| NCE (accredited college of education) | Merit (some universities: Merit/Distinction) | Best suited to education programmes |
| IJMB | Minimum 6 points (reported) / 2 passes in relevant subjects | Points system varies by university |
| JUPEB | Minimum 6 points (reported) / 2 passes in relevant subjects | Points system varies by university |
| Cambridge / GCE A’Level | Minimum 2 A’Level passes in relevant subjects | Must be in subjects relevant to the course |
| First degree (recognised university) | Degree in a relevant field | For second degree or course change |
| NABTEB advanced certificates (ANBC/ANTC), NBAIS higher Islamic studies, International Baccalaureate | As recognised by JAMB and the university | Check the university’s brochure entry |
Treat the thresholds above as JAMB’s floor and commonly reported minima, not as your university’s requirement. A university can require Upper Credit where JAMB allows Lower Credit, or 10 JUPEB points where another accepts 6. The brochure entry for your course at your university is the authority.
Other requirements that catch DE candidates out
- Relevance: your advanced qualification subjects must be relevant to your intended course. Engineering expects Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at A’Level; Medicine expects Biology, Chemistry and Physics; Accounting expects an ND in Accountancy or relevant A’Level subjects; Law expects Arts/Social Science subjects. An irrelevant qualification, however strong, does not qualify you for the course.
- Verification: your awarding institution must verify your qualification before admission is processed. Start that process early — verification delays are a common reason DE admissions stall.
- Statement validity: guides report that a statement of result is valid only within a limited period (NCE 1 year, others 3 years). If your statement is old, get the certificate or a fresh statement before registering.
- Age: DE candidates must meet JAMB’s minimum age rule (16, as set at the policy meeting). For DE candidates this is rarely an issue, since advanced qualifications take 1–3 years to obtain.
- Transcripts: some universities require your academic transcript from your awarding institution, in addition to your certificate. Confirm with your chosen university whether it requires one, and request it early — transcripts take time.
- Regularisation: if your first qualification was obtained without a JAMB record (for example, a polytechnic admission without UTME), you may need JAMB regularisation before DE — see JAMB Regularisation: Requirements and Process.
How to check your university’s actual DE requirement
- Open the JAMB brochure (IBASS) entry for your course at your university — it lists the DE requirements for that course.
- Check the university’s DE screening notice for the current cycle, which may add requirements (transcript, screening exam, departmental thresholds).
- If the brochure and the notice disagree, follow the notice for the current cycle and confirm with the university’s admission office.
- Do this before you buy the DE ePIN. The ePIN is not refundable because you discovered afterwards that your qualification does not meet the course requirement.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for DE with only O’Level results and no advanced qualification? No. That is a UTME application, not DE. DE requires an advanced qualification in addition to O’Level credits.
Can I apply for DE with ND Pass? JAMB’s commonly reported minimum for ND is Lower Credit. A Pass may not meet most universities’ requirements — check your university’s brochure entry for the course before applying.
Does my ND grade matter, or just having the ND? It matters. Universities set grade thresholds (Lower Credit, Upper Credit, Merit) and competitive courses set higher ones.
Can I apply for DE into a course unrelated to my ND/A’Level? Generally no. Your advanced qualification must be relevant to the intended course. Check the brochure entry for acceptable qualifications for that course.
My NCE statement is 2 years old. Can I still use it for DE? Guides report NCE statements are valid for 1 year only. Get a fresh statement or your certificate before registering, and confirm the current rule with JAMB or your university.
