Polytechnics have a lower JAMB floor than universities, but that does not mean every polytechnic course is open at the floor score. The same three layers apply — JAMB minimum, institution cut-off, departmental cut-off — just at lower starting points.
The three cut-offs for polytechnics
1. JAMB’s minimum (the floor). For the 2026 cycle, as reported from JAMB’s policy meeting, the minimum for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of agriculture and innovation enterprise institutions was 100. That is the floor below which no polytechnic in those categories may admit.
2. The institution’s cut-off. Each polytechnic sets its own minimum for its screening or Post-UTME — often 100, 120, 140 or higher, depending on the polytechnic’s demand. Popular federal polytechnics routinely set theirs above the floor.
3. The departmental cut-off. Within a polytechnic, each ND programme has its own cut-off. Competitive programmes — Computer Science, Engineering programmes, Accountancy, Mass Communication, Science Laboratory Technology — close higher than less competitive programmes, even at the same polytechnic.
How polytechnic admission actually works
Polytechnics admit into National Diploma (ND) programmes through UTME, and the process after UTME is similar in shape to universities: screening or Post-UTME where the polytechnic runs one, aggregate ranking where it uses one, and admission through CAPS. Your offer, when it comes, still appears on JAMB CAPS, and you still accept or reject it there — see JAMB CAPS Explained for First-Time Candidates.
Two differences from universities are worth knowing:
- The floor is lower, but the ranking is just as real. A score of 100 clears JAMB’s floor. It does not guarantee a place in a competitive ND programme at a popular polytechnic.
- Screening models vary more. Some polytechnics run a Post-UTME exam, some run screening on UTME + O’Level only, and some weight O’Level grades heavily. Your aggregate formula depends on your polytechnic — see How to Calculate JAMB Aggregate Score and confirm the formula in your polytechnic’s notice.
How to find your real cut-off
- Confirm JAMB’s current minimum for the cycle (100 for polytechnics in 2026).
- Check your polytechnic’s screening/Post-UTME notice for its general cut-off.
- Check the departmental cut-off for your ND programme, from the polytechnic’s notice or its previous cycle’s list — as a guide, not a promise.
- Calculate your aggregate on your polytechnic’s formula before comparing it with a departmental figure.
If your score is below your programme’s cut-off
- Change programme within the same polytechnic to one your aggregate meets.
- Change institution to a polytechnic whose cut-off for your programme is within your range — state polytechnics and less competitive federal polytechnics are real options, not consolation prizes.
- Check HND and part-time routes only if they genuinely fit your situation — they are different programmes with different entry requirements, not shortcuts to the same ND place.
- Prepare for the next cycle with a programme and institution choice matched to your scores.

Frequently asked questions
What was JAMB’s minimum cut-off for polytechnics in 2026? 100, as reported from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, covering polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of agriculture and innovation enterprise institutions.
Does scoring 100 guarantee admission to a polytechnic? No. It clears JAMB’s floor. You must also meet your polytechnic’s general cut-off and the departmental cut-off for your programme.
Are polytechnic cut-offs the same as university cut-offs? No. The JAMB floor is lower for polytechnics (100 vs 150 for universities in 2026), and each polytechnic sets its own cut-offs independently.
Do polytechnics use CAPS? Yes. Polytechnic admissions are processed through JAMB CAPS, and you accept or reject offers there, just as with universities.
Can I move from a polytechnic ND to a university later? ND holders can apply for Direct Entry into universities, subject to the university’s Direct Entry requirements for the course. That is a separate process — see JAMB Direct Entry Registration Guide when it publishes.
